Production: Lighting

In my film there was many discussions between us about how the lighting was going to be set up and how the effects would help achieve the mood of the film we are attempting to set.

Because the film is set during the morning to mid-day, we needed to open a few windows and give the effect of 'natural' lighting. During the flashback, we added in the effects of black and white to give a more dramatic effect, and for this we needed to create a half-light, half-dark composition. Finally during the end as he is in the kitchen we needed to add a single light above the kitchen table, the single light gives a sense of the character being alone and the light shining on just him makes it seem as if all the eyes are on the him.

We needed to borrow quite a few balanced stands and position the camera so the light standing on the balance would not be shown on the film.

Production: Shooting

After choosing the actors, location, props, camera angles and techniques it was now time to start our filming. Our prediction was that it would take a week to film the essential parts of my film. However we realised this was a very inaccurate prediction and our film was created in around 3 days. The reason we believed it would take a week was because our original idea was to film outside, and as we now started to film inside, we had lighting and camera positioning on our side. As a result we felt more comfortable and confident about creating our ideal film.

Production: Scripting

Our script was not that hard to create as we decided we wanted minimal talking. Because we were creating the opening sequence of a film, to make it tense wedeemed it more effective to have minimal talking. With flashbacks playing throughout the opening, there could be many effects drawn from the silence of the main character. With the main character not talking and not showing many emotions it would confuse the audience. He would fit the typical role of a shy, quiet boy. However when the flashbacks showing the boy raping and savagely beating a girl, the audience would realize he there is a lot more to him than meets the eye. Stereotypically in thrillers, when there is silence you are expecting something alarming to occur. Altough script is vital within a film, we concluded that if, for the opening of a film the main character was silent it would make our film a lot more mysterious and have a greater effect on the audience.

Development of Ideas: Final Ideas, Positives and Negatives

After much deliberation we have finally decided to go for an unusual thriller which will capture the audiences eye while attempting to fill quite a few of the stereotypical thriller genre techniques. Our film will consist of a boy who is alone in his house. While he is carrying out his daily routine, he begins to get flashbacks of the monster he was in the past. Flashbacks consisting of short precise clips of him taking a girl victim, abusing her and murdering her.

The initial reason we thought this was a good storyline is because it is not common. By giving our thriller a sort of twist, the audience would be in more suspense as they do not know what to expect. With distorted pictures and other techniques, we feel that this unique thriller will gain very positive reviews and the added suspense will make the film even more thrilling.

The only drawback we could find from this storyline would be the editing. It will take a long time to cut small clips and add them together to make flashbacks. Seeing as we will have to implement these flashbacks throughout the film it will be extremely time consuming and would take a lot of effort. However we are confident we will push ourselves to create all the flashbacks in a timely fashion and so hopefully we can overcome this problem.
